Althoughthecategoryof‘PropagandaArtist’isalower-rankingdesignationthan‘People’sArtist’,thepropagandaartistsaregiventhevitaltaskofkeepingthepopulationinformed.Postersfirstcametoprominenceduringthe1950–53KoreanWarandtheyarestilldisplayedprominentlythroughoutthecapitalandcountryside.Slogansareoftentakenfromstatementsmadebythecountry’sleadershipandfromnewspapereditorials.

NorthKoreanpostersportrayawidevarietyoftopics:fromphrasesreinforcingpartypoliciestomessagesreiteratingcampaignsonculture,publichealth,educationandsports.Workspresentedinthisexhibitionprimarilyillustratetopicsrelatedtoagriculturaldevelopmentandfoodproduction—areasofparticularinterestbasedontheyearsthatKatharinaZellwegerhasaddressedfoodandfoodsecurity-relatedissues.
